Ajeromi-Ifelodun Local Government, on Saturday, September 26, 2026, observed the September edition of the monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise, reaffirming its commitment to promoting a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment across the Local Government.
The national award-winning Chairman, Hon. Dr. Olalekan Olu Akindipe, was joined by the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health District V, Dr. Oladapo Asiyanbi, and his team for this month’s edition. In his usual pragmatic manner, the Chairman led the enforcement team from the Council Secretariat to the Wilmer area to ensure compliance with the sanitation exercise. Residents responded positively by cleaning their surroundings and properly packing refuse.
Hon. Akindipe thereafter proceeded to Coconut Bus Stop, where he inspected and monitored the ongoing evacuation and clearing of a heap of refuse in the area.
Speaking during the exercise, Hon. Dr. Olalekan Olu Akindipe stated that environmental sanitation should be a daily habit. He emphasized the need for increased enforcement to ensure full compliance with environmental sanitation regulations. He also frowned at vehicular movement during the exercise, stressing that it was inappropriate for vehicles to ply the roads while the exercise was ongoing, and warned that necessary action would be taken against defaulters in subsequent exercises.
The Chairman noted the significant impact the monthly exercise has had on the Local Government, stating that it has gradually become a norm, with residents and other stakeholders increasingly embracing their responsibility towards achieving a cleaner and healthier Ajeromi-Ifelodun.
He commended residents for their cooperation and high level of compliance, while urging them to sustain the culture of cleanliness beyond the monthly exercise.
The Chairman reiterated that “health is wealth and cleanliness is next to godliness,” encouraging all residents to imbibe the habit of maintaining clean and healthy surroundings.
Also speaking during the exercise, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Health District V, Dr. Oladapo Asiyanbi, highlighted the importance of environmental sanitation in promoting public health.
According to him, the evacuation of refuse dumps is essential to creating a safer, cleaner, and more aesthetically pleasing environment. He noted that proper sanitation would contribute significantly to reducing environmental hazards and the risk of disease outbreaks, thereby safeguarding the health and well-being of residents. He appreciated residents for their compliance and encouraged them to maintain the momentum and improve on it where possible.
The Head of the Environment Department, Mr. Idris Olusesan, also commended residents for the impressive level of compliance recorded during the exercise. He encouraged residents to continue working hand-in-hand with the government to maintain a clean and healthy environment.
He emphasized that maintaining environmental cleanliness is a collective responsibility and urged residents to make proper waste disposal and regular cleaning of their surroundings a continuous practice.
The Local Government appreciates residents and other stakeholders for their cooperation and support, while urging everyone to sustain the collective effort towards making Ajeromi-Ifelodun a cleaner, healthier, and more livable Local Government.
Meanwhile, the Executive Chairman directed all Honourable Councillors, Supervisors, and other political office holders to remain in their respective wards to monitor the exercise. Consequently, the exercise took place simultaneously in all wards of the Council.
